The American Gulag: Mistakes?

Ehab Elmaghraby was swept up in the post 9-11 hysteria and held in detention for months and deported after he had been cleared of any links to terrorism. Today the US government settled a suit and agreed to pay him $300,000. What about all the other people whose innocence cannot be determined because we won't allow them access to the American justice system?

This is the very essence of totalitarian Fascism: arbitrary arrest and detention with half an appology if the person can somehow manage to get free, but the system itself is built to avoid that happening. This is the American Gulag!

Problems for the 21st Century: Water

Water, the availability of clean drinkable water is shaping up to be one of the most pressing problems facing a large number of the earth's inhabitants in this century. In Latin America, the movement towards privatization during the past 25 years is now being questioned. Often the push towards privatization has been fueled by the failure of state and municipally owned water utilities to adequately address the problem. Privatization has also failed as well. Now with the move back towards state control, will the state governments have the resources and the will to solve the problems?

Tibetan monks protest IOC lack of action towards China

Tibetan monks have been on a hunger strike to protest the Olympic committee's lack of action on the human rights situation in China. Stating that with the awarding of the Olympic games to China in 2008, the IOC pledged to monitor the human rights situation in China, but the IOC has not followed up on it's promise. In fact in it's current statements and refusal to meet with the protesters, it maintains that it has no role to play in the human rights issue. At issue is the 55 year old Chinese occupation of Tibet and it's extraordinarily harsh treatment of dissenters. One of the monks spent 29 years in a Chinese prison in Tibet.

The American Gulag: Denial is a river in Washington

Rumsfeld denies that anyone is being tortured in Guantanamo. He also denies anyone permission to visit or inspect the prison. "Rumsfeld said there had been more than a dozen previous probes and it would not serve anyone's purpose to "rehash all of this."" Strike another chorus of "When the Lie Gets So Big".

The American Gulag: The UN Report

"The United States committed acts amounting to torture at Guantanamo Bay, including force-feeding detainees and subjecting them to prolonged solitary confinement". "In their view, the legal regime applied to these detainees seriously undermines the rule of law and a number of fundamental universally recognized human rights, which are the essence of democratic societies," the report said.

The report said the U.S. system of justice for the detainees was unfair and cited poor treatment that included prolonged solitary confinement and sensory deprivation. The experts accused doctors of force-feeding detainees on hunger strike in violation of the U.N. Principles of Medical Ethics and standards adopted by the World Medical Association.

The report recommended the United States close Guantanamo Bay and revoke all special interrogation techniques authorized by the Defense Department. Its experts accused the United States of violating the detainees' rights to a fair trial, freedom of religion and health.

1984 Revisited

The government under the Bush mis-administration is putting in place a massive computer system to mine information from e-mails, blogs and other unnamed sources of information to create a massive spying progam on not just US citizens but all citizens of the world. This is the "New World Order" in action.
