White House Ignores Snowden Petition for Full Year

Edward Snowden is still waiting to hear if he’ll get a presidential pardon.

He probably won’t get one after embarrassing President Barack Obama with revelations of massive U.S. government surveillance programs, but 100,000 of the exiled whistle-blower’s fans nonetheless earned the proposal an official White House response on June 24, 2013.

They did so by signing a whitehouse.gov petition that quickly cleared the six-figure threshold for feedback.

“Edward Snowden is a national hero and should be immediately issued … a full, free, and absolute pardon,” the petition said.

Edward Snowden to speak at SXSW conference - Today

NSA leaker Edward Snowden is getting ready to speak at this year's South By Southwest Interactive Festival.

But the former NSA contractor won't appear in person at the conference in Austin on Monday.

He'll participate remotely via video as Snowden remains in Moscow where he's living in temporary asylum.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has submitted written testimony [PDF] to an EU committee investigating mass surveillance. Glyn Moody's Techdirt post gives a great tl;dr summary of the document, but you should really read it for yourself. It's ten single-spaced pages, but Snowden turns out to be an extremely talented writer who beautifully lays out his arguments, managing the trick of being dispassionate while simultaneously conveying the import of his subject matter.
