The armed coup in Kiev is painfully similar to CIA operations to oust unwanted foreign leaders in Iran, Chile and Venezuela, said US filmmaker Oliver Stone after interviewing Ukraine’s ousted president for a documentary.

Stone spent four hours in Moscow talking to Viktor Yanukovich, who was deposed from power during the February 2014 coup, the filmmaker wrote on his Facebook page.

A new front is swiftly opening in the war over embattled Ukraine’s future: energy, with Russia threatening to cut off natural gas to the country as early as Tuesday.

Russian leaders are prepared to stop crucial gas flows and squeeze their struggling neighbor economically even as Russian citizens take an increasingly open role in the violent conflict in Ukraine’s east.

Russian FM slams West over Ukraine

Russia on Friday accused the West of triggering the Ukrainian crisis by its "megalomania," as fighting continued in Ukraine's east between pro-Russia insurgents and government forces two days before a presidential election.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov urged the West to reach a settlement based on mutual interests.

"If we sincerely want to help the Ukrainian people overcome this crisis, it's necessary to abandon the notorious zero-sum games, stop encouraging xenophobic and neo-Nazi sentiments and get rid of dangerous megalomania," Lavrov said in a speech at a security conference in Moscow organized by the Russian Defense Ministry.

American Hawks Who Never Learn

President Barack Obama has gotten much attention from a single extended response he gave to a question about his foreign policy from Ed Henry of Fox News in a press conference last week in Manila. The apparently strongly felt need, on the part of some of the President’s hardline critics, to strike back at his remarks and to try to discredit them indicates that he spoke some embarrassing truths.

Garden-variety disagreement with the substance of the President’s policies and what he has said to support them would never have stimulated this kind of response.

The President made several perceptive observations about the less productive aspects of current discourse in Washington about Ukraine, Syria, and other difficult issues, but if there was a single “ouch” line that made the critics most uncomfortable it may have been Mr. Obama’s comment that “for some reason many who were proponents of what I consider to be a disastrous decision to go into Iraq haven’t really learned the lesson of the last decade, and they keep on just playing the same note over and over again.”

Kerry’s Hyper-Hypocrisy Hits Escape Velocity

How does US Secretary of State John Kerry do it? Just when you think his hypocrisy and ability for doublethink have reached the outer limits, the American top diplomat finds another quantum leap to flabbergast the listener. Indeed, he may have already reached «escape velocity» in his irrational thinking, making him irretrievably lost to the orbit of normal intelligent dialogue.

The latest blast from Kerry is his terse dismissal of planned referenda in theeastern regions of Ukraine this weekend. The polls have been organized by the people of Donetz, Lugansk and Slavyansk, among other places, to determine a new constitutional political arrangement for citizens living in the regions. The vote may call for a federalized Ukraine in which regions like the eastern cities of Kharkov and Donetz assume autonomy from the central capital, Kiev. Or, they may vote to secede altogether as the people of Crimea have already done.

Washington and the Corporate Media Are in Full Propaganda Mode on Ukraine

The lies, propaganda and rank hypocrisy emanating from Washington, and echoed by the US corporate media regarding events in Ukraine are stunning and would be laughable, but for the fact that they appear to be aimed at conditioning the US public for increasing confrontation with Russia – confrontation which could easily tip over the edge into direct military conflict, with consequences that are too dreadful to contemplate.

It would be beyond ironic if, a quarter of a century after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of nearly half a century of Cold War and Mutual Assured Destruction, during all of which time US and Russian soldiers never fought against each other, we now ended up with soldiers from our two countries actually doing battle with each other, instead of just fighting proxy wars.
